Motorcycle Sunglasses for an Impact

Riding a motorcycle is an exhilarating and economical form of transportation. Whether you ride your bike for a daily commute or you cruise the highways for pleasure, it is important to protect your eyes not only from the sun’s rays but also from flying debris.

Many motorcycle riders don’t have a windshield or wear a full-face helmet. Instead, the only protection they have is a pair of sunglasses. That’s why it is important that they wear the best motorcycle sunglasses for an impact.  So, how can you tell if your sunglasses are able to withstand an impact?

Eye Protection Standards

Recently, the American National Standards Institute has recommended and approved a new standard for occupational and educational eye and face protection. The new standard requires that protective sunglasses be tested for impact resistance. This is important because, when you are riding, there is a risk of rocks, wind, rain, leaves, bugs, and other road debris striking you in the head and face at high speeds. That’s why you will want to be sure that your sunglasses meet the new ANSI Z87.1–2010 standard.

Here are some of the new modifications from the 2003 version of the standard:

  • Protective eyewear must meet both high mass and velocity testing requirements and display the Z87.1 mark on the product.
  • Eye protectors must deal with the areas of droplets and splashing, dust, and optical radiation.
  • New requirements state that products must be designed for small heads. The smaller sizes are indicated with the letter H.
  • The new products are required to be organized by the kinds of hazard the product is defending, as opposed to the category and type of the product.

Why Wear Impact Resistant Sunglasses?

Here are just a few reasons to protect your eyes with the best and safest possible impact resistant sunglasses:

  • Being hit with a flying object could severely damage your eye.
  • Flying debris can cause you to be distracted and take your eyes off the road. (One of the major causes of motorcycle accidents is the distraction of riders from debris hitting them in the face.)
  • Heavy rain, dust and dirt can be painful.
  • Clear vision helps you stay alert.

Equipment for motorcycle riding is an investment. The best gear is not cheap, but the right pair of sunglasses could save your vision. Therefore, when searching for the best motorcycle sunglasses for impact, look for the ANSI Z87.1 mark.
